Three Yellow Daffodils, Spring Bouquet

It's been such an unusual spring-it was very cold and then the sun shone and everything happened at once.  The early spring flowers and late spring flowers have all opened.   I've been working hard to keep up.  This one will be at the Vashon Art Studio Tour the first two weekends in May, the 6th,  7th, 13th, and 14th.  I'll be at stop # 23 in Dockton, 25913  99th Avenue SW- opposite the former Dockton store.

Dark Hills and Southworth Ferry

This one will be in the Vashon Art Studio Tour the first two weekends of May, May 6 & 7 and May 13 &14.  I'll be showing paintings at Stop # 23 at Dockton Pottery.  Here's a map.  See you there!
Late afternoon sun throws a shadow across the hills at Southworth.  A spot of sunshine lights up the end of the ferry and makes the view more dramatic.  A view of the Vashon-Fauntleroy-Southworth ferry as seen from the water of Puget Sound.

Spring Daffodils on Turquoise

These little daffodils have multiple flowers on a single stem and bright orange centers to add a cheery note.  They are among the earliest of the daffodils growing in my garden and a perfect size to fit in these small glass vases.  This painting will be at the Vashon Island Art Studio Tour during the first two weekends in May.  Look for this and other paintings at stop # 23, Dockton Pottery,  in Dockton, WA.  And here's a map to help you find the stop http://vashonislandartstudiotour.com/Spring2017/asssets/map/S2017map.pdf.

Red Camellia on the Table, Camellia Bouquet Against Gray, Red Flowers and Round Glass Vase SOLD

ETSY store.
One of the flowers in the Red Camellia bouquet fell off so I left it on the table and added it to the painting.  Spring has finally arrived and everything is in bloom at once.  Flowers that have been hanging on for weeks are suddenly spent and wilted.  The camellias have been resisting the wet cold weather but the sunshine has done them in.  I like the waxy stiff leaves and the simple color scheme - red, green, and gold against gray. On my ETSY store

Silver Pot and Oranges in Backlight, Shiny Reflections and metal Pitcher

Another shiny silver pot.   I used a shield to create an interesting shadow with a small spotlight of light that creates sparkle on the pot and tabletop.   I like the glowing background.   This painting will be in the Vashon Art Studio Tour the first two weekends in May.  Link to map of Vashon Spring Art Tour  I will be showing my paintings at Stop # 23 in Dockton.  See you there!  In the meantime, this painting is at my ETSY store

Deer Against the Light, Deer in my Yard,

Vashon Island Art Studio Tour,  first two weekends in May.  I'll be showing paintings at Stop # 23 in Dockton.    When we first moved to the island and saw the deer, I said "Oooh, quiet, don't spook, them, how cool!" Now when I go out in the yard they just ignore me.   They eat everything, there are NO deer-proof plants.  Still,  they do make an interesting painting subject.  8" x 10" oil on panel

The daffodils are blooming late this year and holding on during the cool spring, waiting for the bees to emerge. I wanted these flowers to look like they were glowing from within.  I put a strong light on one side and threw a shadow over the background to increase the contrast.  This one will be in the Vashon Art Studio Tour the first two weekends of May. I will be showing at stop # 23 in Dockton.  Map of Art Studio Tour

Thre Red Camellia in a Round Glass Vase SOLD

It's spring, the camellias are blooming - time to paint!  How to make a light-struck area without painting pasty pink?  I used a medium that allowed me to thin my reds and apply the oil almost like watercolor-very dilute with the white of the canvas showing through.   I like the shape of the vase and the repeat in the circular arrangement of the flowers.  Since this one just sold, look for more of my work at the Vashon Art Studio Tour the first two weekends in May.  Link to map of Vashon Art Studio Tour.

Silver Pot and Oranges in Side Light

This shiny silver pot is such a good subject for reflections.  I used a shield to throw a shadow across the left side of the still life. The shadows add more drama and make the highlights more exciting.  I especially like the red reflection on the rim of the lid.  This painting will be in the Vashon Art Studio Tour the first two weekends in May.  Link to map of Vashon Spring Art Tour  I will be showing my paintings at Stop # 23 in Dockton.  See you there!  In the meantime, this painting is at my ETSY store

Sunset Over Talequah

A plein air painting from several years ago.  This one is the view looking from Maury Island across Quartermaster Harbor to the tip of Tahlequah and beyond to the hills of Tacoma.  The sun was setting and I was painting very quickly to get all the colors as the sun moved not only from top to bottom but also from left to right.  I had to hold my hand up to squint near the sun without actually looking directly at it.   This was probably painted in November because the sun sets far to the right in the summer time.  8" x 10" oil on panel.  This one will be in the 2017 Spring Art Tour - I'll be at stop # 23 in Dockton -First two weekends in May.

Mt. Rainier in Blue and Pink

An 8 x 0 original oil painting of Mt. Rainier in late afternoon.   The mountain is viewed across the water as the sunlight turns pink and lavender.  The painting is characterized by saturated color and loose bold brushwork.  On my ETSY store

Metal Bowl with Clementine Oranges on Pink

This was painted in January. The saturated colors and bright contrasts were an antidote to the gray weather and the short days.  Even though the colors are bright, they are limited; just pink orange and neutral grays and browns.  On my ETSY store.

Low Silver Bowl and Three Clementines SOLD

Painted this winter when the clementines were abundant.  I like the limited colors and contrast between very saturated colors and neutral grays and browns.  On my ETSY store

Red Onion on Gold

The shadow side of the onion is a bit cooler - towards violet, and the lit side is a bit warmer towards red.

Purple Onion on Green - Kitchen art

A purple onion in strong light with loose onion skins.  I like the cool pink colors reflected on the shadow side of the onion.

Silver Pot and Clementines on Pink

I use paper and fabric as backdrops in my still life compositions.  Sometimes I use very neutral grays and sometimes I go wild with color.  The oranges and pinks are close to each other on the color wheel and create harmony, but are different temperatures (warm and cool) and create drama. On my ETSY store

Bllue Teapot with Clementines

The clementines are in season, and not only are they good to eat, they are lovely to paint.  I like the saturated color of the oranges next to the dark complement of the blue teapot.  This is one of several clementine paintings that I did in response to dark and gray weather.  A bit of tropical sunshine in my studio to chase away the winter.  On my ETSY store

Clementines on Pink SOLD

When it's gray and wintery outside, it's time for some cheery clementine oranges on a pink tabletop.  I like the limited palette.  I used a neon pink paper for the tabletop which created interesting colors for the shadows.  The cool pinks and purples are exciting against the warm oranges browns and reds.  I also like the smooth gessoboard surface, it allows me to create lots of texture which offsets my tendency to fussiness.   On my ETSY store

Daisies in a Jelly Jar, Summer Bouquet in White and Gold

Painted this summer when the daisies in my garden bloomed. I like the fast brushwork in the background and the simple color scheme.  On my ETSY Store

Pt Robinson Llighthouse SOLD

One of the small paintings I did for the Artist Studio Tour.  The important thing about painting small is to simplify the composition.  Too much detail is very busy in a small size.  I moved the fuel shed, the fence and the large metal light tower a little to the left until they left the picture altogether, and I took out the chain link enclosure on the back of the building.  It still looks like the Pt Robinson lighthouse-just simplified.

Red Grapes on Black and Gray

This is a favorite idea of mine- a backlit subject silhouetted against a dark background.  I like the strong design created by the sharp contrast.  The play of reflected and translucent lights in the grapes
creates a nice feeling of three dimensions in a shallow space.  I also like the contrast of the warm grapes against a cool gray.

New Paintings at 2016 Holiday Art Tour

I hadn't posted for a while because I hadn't taken any pictures.  These paintings are at the Vashon Holiday Art Tour Stop #32 Pink House painters in Burton opposite the post office.  I took these paintings with indoor lighting so the colors are a bit off.  All these are framed.
Sailboats at the dock 8x10 - one of several I painted from a scene from the Center for Wooden Boats at Lake Union in Seattle.
Car Show 4 x 6 I do like old cars - to look at, not to drive - I'm not great at a manual transmission.
Cove Beach Shack  A sunny day on the west side of Vashon.
A sailor balancing his small sailboat as it heels in the wind.

Coming up this weekend.  I'll be showing paintings of sailboats, paintings of ferries, Vashon scenes and still lifes.

Long Legged Bug SOLD

I collect dead bugs to paint.  I had this one in my freezer for several months because I knew I was going to paint some smaller paintings for a miniature show in December.  Technically not really a miniature painting since it is not smaller than life or 1/6 scale;  this bug is painted life size.  I wound up using a very small brush to paint those very long legs.    This painting is mounted on a gray board and framed in a very narrow metal frame with the outside dimension of 6" x 6" On my ETSY store

Red Grapes on Gray

Not very red grapes; more like pinkish with green and gold and bits of magenta.  I put the spotlight above and slightly behind the grapes which makes them glow from within, and also casts lovely lights and shadows on the grapes and the stems.  The problem was the grapes were very tasty and my subject material kept getting smaller as I positioned and re-positioned the grapes.  I tried to create a "hole" in the middle to allow the viewer to enter into the space.  A slightly smaller painting 5" X 5"  On my ETSY store.

Blue Teapot with Sunflowers on Gray SOLD

This beautiful blue enameled teapot was a gift and had to be painted.  I like the shape and the color and enjoyed painting the yellow flowers.  I placed this pot at eye level so I had to suggest roundness with shadows and highlights The sunflowers are the last of the season; I chose them for contrast with
the dark blue pot.  This one was fun to paint.  On my ETSY store

Blue Enameled Teapot - Teapot with Flowers - Sunflowers and Blue Pot SOLD

Another painting in a small format - this one is for the masters in miniature show at the Blue Heron -Vashon Center for the Arts gallery coming up in December.  I like the top lighting and the warm gray color that contrasts with the cool blue pot.
This one is 4.5 inches square.

Plums on a Branch - Italian Prunes - Still life of Plums- Blue and Purple Fruit

I painted these plums several weeks ago from the last of the Italian plums that were in the orchard.    There were so many plums that the tree branches were bowed down from the weight and touched the ground.  They looked like clusters of grapes.
I like the dusty blue and how the dark purple shows through the light blue.  Painted in a smaller format 4x4. On my ETSY store.
